6 Tips to Overcome Gadget Addiction in Children

Lately, many parents have complained that their children are addicted to gadgets. What are the signs? Check out here the following tips on how to fix it.

1. Limit use

Limit the use of gadgets according to the recommendations of the age group. The American Academy of Pediatrics (2013) dan Canadian Paediatric Society (2010) has published screen time guidelines such as the following:

  • Children under 2 years of age: should not be left playing on their own gadgets, including TVs, smartphones and tablets.
  • Children 2 to 4 years of age: less than an hour a day.
  • Age 5 years and over: preferably no more than two hours a day for recreational use (excluding study needs).

2. Give a schedule

Schedule the right time to play gadgets. Apart from that, parents also have to prepare other alternative activities so that children don’t get bored and switch to gadgets again.

3. Don’t give full access

Place the TV or computer in the living room. So when the child uses it, he is not alone and is still under the supervision of other family members.

In addition, mobile devices should not be completely left to children. Let the child ask permission first if they want to use it, and take it back when finished.

4. Set gadget free areas

Make regulations not to use gadgets in certain places. For example at the dining table, in the bedroom, and in the car.

5. Teach children the importance of restraint

Make sure to praise your child when he or she manages to refrain from playing games and follow the rules that have been set.

6. Set a good example

It is common knowledge that children imitate what their parents do. For that, Parents must also be a good example, put your cellphone down and play with your little one.
